The festive scene on this quilled holiday card reinterprets a hand-colored lithograph illustrating the Common Cardinal Grosbeak. This hand-colored lithograph comes from The Birds of America from Drawings Made in the United States (1840–44), a book lithographed by John T. Bowen (American, ca. 1801–?1856) and designed after John James Audubon (American. b. Haiti, 1785–1851). Around 1820, Audubon made it his mission to paint every bird in North America. He subsequently created 435 preparatory watercolors for what would become The Birds of America, a lavish book of copperplate etchings, engravings, and aquatints, originally printed between 1827 and 1838.
