In the Museum’s collection is a marble relief of the Virgin and Child by Benedetto da Maiano (Italian, 1442–1497), made about 1490, near the time when the young Michelangelo came under his influence. With sensitivity and naturalism, Benedetto depicts the Virgin’s loving gaze as the infant Christ grasps her veil and she gently cradles him. This expressive relief is the basis for our reproduction.
