Our coaster set nods to one of the most revelatory innovations in the global history of ceramics. The practice of painting cobalt blue imagery on white porcelain burgeoned in 14th-century China, after which it was adapted by potters around the world and through the centuries. An homage to this classic color palette, each coaster features a detail from a different blue-and-white ceramic treasure in The Met collection: an earthenware tile (ca. 1875) designed by Christopher Dresser (British, 1834β1904) and manufactured by Minton(s) (British, 1793βpresent), a Chinese platter and rack (1800β1830), a dish with a scene of tea cultivation crafted in China around 1740β45 for the European market, and a late 17th-century Japanese dish with cranes.
