The timeless floral motif on our stylish oversize ruana comes from a silk twill damask textile fragment made sometime between the 11th and 12th centuries during China’s Northern Song dynasty (960–1127). Now in The Met collection, this remarkable piece was meticulously woven with boys tucked amid floral scrolls and lotus pods, which allude to the concept of lineage. The lotus is an enduring symbol of rebirth in the Buddhist tradition; as such, multi-seeded lotus pods serve as emblems of plentiful offspring.
