Embroidered Mule Shoe Ornament

Women’s footwear has embraced more variations since 1900 than in the entire previous history of fashion. Balancing function and fantasy, the great designers of the 20th century have created some of the most beautiful shoes ever made, adapting styles from the past with a contemporary sensibility. The Museum’s carefully detailed shoe ornaments capture the charm and grace of the actual shoes, now in the collection of the Museum’s Costume Institute.

The Embroidered Mule Shoe Ornament is based on a pair of American or European mules (ca. 1927). We’ve reinterpreted the original black shoes, embellished with a striking floral design, into a hand-painted ornament.
