Women’s footwear has embraced more variations since 1900 than in the entire previous history of fashion. Balancing function and fantasy, the great designers of the 20th century have created some of the most beautiful shoes ever made, adapting styles from the past with a contemporary sensibility. The Museum’s carefully detailed shoe ornaments capture the charm and grace of the actual shoes, now in the collection of the Museum’s Costume Institute.
Our Hearts and Flowers Shoe Ornament is based on a pair of head-turning midcentury American pumps. We’ve translated the original heels, made of pink leather and rayon featuring a playful pink-and-blue ribbon print with hearts and flowers, into a hand-painted resin ornament.
