The hand-painted Striped Evening Slipper Shoe Ornament is based on a pair of remarkable British evening slippers (1860–70) decorated with ribbon stripes and a tufted accent on the toe. Such eye-catching embellishments were unusual for the time, when the intricate ornamentation of women’s footwear served little purpose concealed beneath a large hoop skirt.
